The importance of sustainable farming

We are a family of utterly obsessed foodies, passionate about every step of the process - from the very moment spices flower in the soil, to the heavenly smells and sensational flavours enjoyed in the kitchen - and every single step in-between. We want everything to do with food to be loved and enjoyed, and to be a conscious and sustainable affair which harmoniously supports farmers and excites foodies.

BoTree was founded in 2017 by two brothers-in-law, Peter and Christopher, and while it is a growing business, our ethos will always remain the same: to support farmer cooperatives and small farms to create better, more sustainable supply chains.

Our experience with farm life began when Christopher married wife Aly in Cambodia and together, they started a pepper plantation in Kampot. The best thing about having your own farm is you get to decide how things operate. We wanted to ensure every part of the farm was ethical - from the workers to the produce. That’s why our workers receive food, housing and higher than average wages for the sector. Our workers consist of family members, volunteers and locals. The majority of the farmers are family on the Khmer side and we have regular volunteers who come from all over the world to help out and learn about organic farming.

Our Kampot Pepper is 100% certified organic, with no additives or preservatives and is produced using traditional artisan techniques. As we grow our dream into reality, it is incredibly important to us that the food we produce and share with the world is made using organic and sustainable methods. Organic farming is the most sustainable way of growing food for the planet, people and communities. That’s why when sourcing herbs and spices, we only consider organic products coming from a single-origin.

Single-origin means preserving and optimizing the flavour of a unique terroir, while supporting small farm-holders - enabling direct trade and bypassing brokers who drive prices up and quality down.
